I have a small table clock with a quartz movement.  One day the second hand stopped moving.  Even with a fresh battery installed the second hand did not move.  The interesting thing was that if the crown was pulled out to the first stop, the second hand did move a bit (I.e. would move for a minute or so then stop).  Jiggling the stem in and out a tiny bit would start the second hand moving again.  Thinking that the movement was faulty, I replaced it with a new one (Hattory YR67A).  Lo and behold, the exact same results.  I’m thinking that the only other variable might have something to do with the stem though I can’t see how.  I am still using the original stem since it didn’t seem to want to screw off the rest of the crown assembly.  Thoughts?

Here’s a couple of photos. Hopefully it provides enough details.  The movement is an Epson YR67A. The second photo shows the replacement stem that came with the new movement that I did not install because I couldn’t find a good way to remove the old one for fear of damage.  Again, I’m not sure if the crown assembly is the culprit or not but that’s the only thing I can think of being that the old and new movements exhibit the same symptoms.

Is there a trick to taking the old stem off?  I tried unscrewing it using a couple of pliers and it doesn’t seem to want to budge.
