Lantern pinion repair

Evening everyone,

Whilst dismantling my latest clock ready for cleaning I found these two broken trundles on the lantern pinions. This is the first time I've come across this, in my limited exposure to clocks.

I was wondering what would be the likely cause of failure (are more likely to follow?) metal fatigue, a shock from a fall? The clock has seen a fair bit of neglect/action, or something else?

Whilst not having any specific clock oriented tools. Would a course of action to replace the broken trundles be to use a pin vice with a 1mm bit (I've measured the thickness of the wire to approx 1mm) open up the hole and push out the broken trundle.

Then insert a new replacement cut to length and close the hole carefully with a punch to stop it falling out. Or is there another better method?

Thanks in advance.
