You will need some nifty straightening out of the end curve and maybe a tweek of the hs at the stud to bring to center.

it would be helpful to have a picture of the other side of the balance wheel without the bridge attached so we can see how the terminal curve looks.

Thats the two fixed points of contact of the balance cock holding the spring. The top staff pivot ( indirectly via the collet ) and the stud.

Are you thinking maybe someone has tried to straighen an overcoil into a flat spring by mistake ? The terminal curve looks quite beat up John.

actually what I'm thinking is typically on Elgin watch especially older is it's an over coil. It be easy to tell if we had the other side view or if we had the serial number of the watch we could look that up. It just doesn't quite look right for a flat hairspring. but it still could be a flat hairspring it be easy enough to tell from the other side. Plus it's easy to remove from the balance bridge just loosen up the stud screw and push it out and it's easy enough to get it back.

Ok on further inspection it appears to be a over coi

typically with American pocket watches that's what you're going to find and that's what it looked like.

I enhanced your photo a little bit it appears to be your missing your over coil and yes the stud isn't quite where it's supposed to be. Typically things like this happen if somebody lifts up the balance bridge in the balance stays behind the hairspring gets stretched of what looks like the rest they hairspring is relatively flat.

Ideally when you're practicing with hairsprings it be nice if you had some practice hairsprings to practice with. in other words is nice to have something that you can break because you probably break it before you get good at fixing hairsprings. Then ideally for something like this it be nice to find an example watch the look at how it's over coil is formed because yours is missing.

    • Hi, Would anybody be able to offer some insight as to a possible solution here? When I first opened this watch a while back I thought it was just the end of the ridge and the 'chrome' that had worn away, but taking a look today I see it's worn away the brass to a reasonable extent. Torque comes on the crown wheel, it lifts up and separates from the winding pinion. Is this just a case of replace the mainplate if I want to keep the watch? All the best, John
    • Thanks. That was easier than I though!
    • Can you not remove the pin from the existing spring and just use that? I think if you did something like this you'd need to make sure the piece you cut off was long enough so the thickness didn't interfere with the stud staying in the hole.
    • Hmm ... I can't find anything with a pin like this. I guess with a lathe I could make the pin, then drill a hole in a regular mainspring and rivet the pin to it. Can't really see me doing that without a watchmaker's lathe, though. Am I going to have to shelve the watch because I can't replace the mainspring? There has to be another way. I wonder if I could cut off the end of the existing spring and use it as a catch for a modern manual-wind spring to hook on to?
    • Восток 2403/581096     So a while back I discovered the website of the Vostok factory. It didn't come up on google but was mentioned in some youtoob video. The information was all in Russian and the English translation wasn't fantastic. The "Put in Basket" button was translated to "Put in Garbage". The prices mentioned were also rather jarring. When looking at this piece the numbers were "Three THOUSAND .... two HUNDRED...." and I was thinking 'aww that's a big number' .... "err rubles". I googled the exchange rate and it turned out to only be 30 something squid, so I put in garbage. The postage said "eight HUNDRED ... and seventy!" and again I was thinking 'aww that's a big number' ... "err rubles". It turned out to only be around 8 quid for international delivery, so I threw in an Amphibia for about five THOUSAND - coz I'm such a big spender. I've replaced the straps on multiple occasions and have been abusing this ever since. Funnily enough fleabay would occasionally have similar models (not the sexy tilted dial) for about double the price. So it appears to be a decent business model. Unfortunately nowadays, and not entirely due to politics, it's gotten trickier to order these. The actual payment would need a slight workaround, and I wouldn't trust the Baltic postmen either (they appear to have a reputation of having sticky fingers). For anyone interested, and the prices would've changed over the years, and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put url's in comments because I wasn't paying attention when reading the forum rules, is this: https://online.vostokinc.ru
