I got lucky

I put a rather cheeky bid on a watchmaker lathe last week, it  was accepted much to my surprise so now I have another fix up ‘learning opperchancity .

Tried to get the eBay pics but didn’t work. I have dismantled it partially, seems to be in reasonable condition but I was struggling to find a makers mark and the way it looked when I opened it up was worried it was a frankenlathe. The tail stock has been poorly painted, will remove that and see what it looks like as the headstock is unpainted. I did find a tiny marking on the headstock that looks to be Wolf Jhan so maybe not too terrible. A decent few collets and a 3 jaw chuck along with some gravers.

 

all in all rather happy with it and will get to sorting it out after I have finished off my staking set refurb(been held up because of circumstances and health). Pictures as I go will follow here as things progress and I have inevitable questions and cry’s for help .

P.S. I never expected to be able to get something like this I had given up on a project that I really want to do, still have to get something else to do it and that might take a while on a pension but I will get there

Post up some pictures when you have chance tom.  I also have a wolf jhan lathe and have only just aquired some gravers to start learning on it.

This seems to have come with some gravers and a parting tool, so well chuffed

Unfortunately some Ebay sellers are putting up the lathes separately to the base, motor, collets, chucks, cross slide, even tailstock.

Sounds like a good buy tom, we will have to have a compare. I've had mine a while but just haven't got around to doing anything with it yet. Came with lots of accessories a steel frame mount. Did you have a motor included?

I've noticed this John, sold separately as parts and accessories seems to fetch a lot more money. I was also lucky with mine, was sold by a watchmakers son, who's grandfather was also a watchmaker. Its possibly had 2 generations of watchmaker owers and was well maintained. Collected it myself from his retired father's home workshop, shame i didn't have more cash on me at the time, there was so much to look at.

I think the parting out trend started with staking sets, why settle for £150-450 for a complete set when you can sell 120+ punches and stakes for nearly 3 times that.

Mine has a singer sewing machine motor, I've seen these used a lot. And also a foot pedal.

Update 

put on the big specs this morning and confirmed the headstock is Wolf Jahn, no other markings anywhere 

the collets with it all measure out to match Wolf Jahn 8mm too

I also in my research found two videos for disassembly and reassembly of this very headstock. Big shoutout of thanks to our very own @Jonfor making these.

@Neverenoughwatchesworth a look at these videos when you get around to servicing your lathe

The tail stock that came with this fits the profile of Wolf Jahn, however unlike normal wolf Jahn stuff doesn’t have the usual silver smooth paint applied but a green hammered finished paint, probably hammerite. Have any of you removed this stuff before and got any tips? I have another project in the Q that needs the same treatment as it has been so badly painted.
