Making a screw plate for American screw sizes

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done this?  Frankly, I am surprised that some entrepreneur has not made such an item.  Am I the only one that finds the need to make screws for American watches.  I often find missing screws in ebay watches.  For Swiss watches, the screw plates that I have invariably work (so far).  But not so for American watches.

What am I missing?

I want to make a screw plate using my newly-acquired Elgin taps, but I have to master this annealing/hardening process.

I've been curious about this too. Seeing the prices that people want for Elgin and Waltham case screws, I've very much like to be able to make my own.  But,  there is a ways to go before I'm making functional screws, especially since I cannot find the appropriate tooling.

Always something.

I have gotten lucky a couple of times where the swiss screw plate was "close enough."  I made a screw for a WRT member recently and mailed it to Norway and it solved his problem.  Happy to do this for free if you get in a bind.

I paid $20 for a SINGLE ELGIN CASE SCREW.  Highway robbery but you do what you gotta do.

I will continue to investigate the DIY screw plate and report back.
