Elgin Balance Wheel Issue

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I  have been working on an Elgin Size 0 wrist watch for a while now, and I'm running into one more, and hopefully the last, issue.

Everything runs fine, when the balance wheel is running.

However, the balance wheel only runs with the watch in some positions (face down, some rotation on it's side), but struggles and then stops stops in others (like face up and other side rotations).

However, when I remove the pallet fork and bridge, the balance wheel runs great in all positions, although only briefly since there is no power being fed into it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be scraping the pallet bridge?

Much appreciated!

First, welcome to the forum.

Regarding your problem, I would remove the balance and check the pivots, it sound like upper pivot (when the watch is face down) could be broken.

Thanks Geo and Frenchie, I will examine the pivots when I get a chance next. I was just thinking that since it didn't seem to be a problem when the pallet fork is removed, that the issue was possibly in there. Will report back with my findings!
