Reattaching Overcoil Hairspring To Stud - Help

Recommended Posts

I'm repairing an ELGIN grade 303 1912 pocket watch.  This one needed a new roller table and roller jewel, which I obtained from parts of an identical junk grade 303.  When I was attaching the overcoil or Breguet type hairspring the end of the hairspring came out of the triangular stud.  I mounted the stud into the balance cock and set the balance cock on it's back and have been trying to get the end of the hairspring to find the hole in the stud once again, but I'm finding this a major challenge.  I've done the same thing successfully with a simple flat hairspring, but the overcoil makes this task very difficult.  Does anyone have any suggestions for making this easier?  I've attached a couple of photos.  One shows the hairspring and one shows the stud mounted in the balance cock.

Thanks for any suggestions!   -Bruce
