Clock balance adjustment ( tik toc)

Hi

I have a German movement mantle clock I am trying to balance, but there seems to be no firmness on either side of the outer swing of the pendulum. The balance seems to move each time I even stop and start the swing. What could the problem be?

There is most likely a friction clutch between the pallet fork and the pendulum pivot. It serves as a automatic beat error corrector. If you don’t find any firmness in the extended pendulum positions the clutch might be to loose.

The above is the most likley cause and needs tightening up, also check the pallet if its the screw on type for being loose.  a picture4 uf the clock and the escapement would help.    thanks
