Russian scopes.

Eyup, hope everyone is well and chilled out. My missus Liz has kindly asked if anyone has any thoughts on this little portable scope that she has just bought herself on ebay. It was a good price and the seller also accepted an offer on it as well which was a nice little bonus for her. I think he was flirting with her too be honest, I'll have to have her make my purchases from now on . Not a clue, but please let us know how it goes. I'm saving up for Cousins Microscope with the barlow 0.7 lens for a 200mm working distance as I only have about 40mm with a 0.5 barlow with the one I bought from facebook

I have two of them in my armory and for what they cost they are excellent. I picked mine up at car boot sales for £5 and £17 respectively.

The pro's are; cheap, optically sound, solidly made.

The con's are; No built in illumination, fixed head angle which is vertical, if you need independent eyepiece adjustment then it is by pulling one of the eye pieces a little out of its tube.

For the price though they are very good (at least mine are) and I do have very much more expensive optics to compare with so it's a fair judgement. Magnification is 8.75x if I remember correctly, and distance between the plane of focus and the objective is just over 14cm or 5.5", so enough room for tools. This is a good general purpose scope.

I think that they must have been standard equipment in UK secondary school bio labs in the '70's and '80's when biology was still taught as a separate subject and students were required to dissect frogs and ox hearts (I can't imagine that happening in this day and age!!!) because at one point there were a lot of them around. Typical eBay auction prices seem to be between £50 and £80 by the time you factor in postage, but I have seen people put them up with BIN prices over £200. No idea if they ever sold them at that price.

I've been looking at the same ones T. Mine is ok but I'd like something with a wider field of view and to have a bit less magnification.

Thanks Marc. She appreciates your review on it.  Two good deals you had there. This one ended up with original box and instructions at £40 plus postage someone else is selling one for over double that. Its something to get my missus started, then if the bug takes hold which it seems to be this can be a back up. Thanks Marc
