American barrel arbor

Recommended Posts

Just stripped down a William and Gilbert 1886 mantle clock, my first American clock for cleaning and by gosh does it need cleaning not come across one this dirty before ,though i dare say a lot of you have and worse.

Anyway my question is how to get the arbor out, the count wheel is riveted to the barrel, on both arbors the rachet wheel won't budge don't want to force anything in case i damage something and just hope the barrels will go on my springwinder ok. Thanks everyone

Yes the ratchet looks like its on a square but won't pull off and i don't want to force it in case i damage something, and the count wheel is riveted on will give it a good clean and have another look.

I'm sure if you put a couple of good man enough screwdrivers under the ratchet wheel it will come off. What a crazy design.

Hi just some advice not about this clock but one i am thinking of buying. Didn't want to start a new thread for this,i am told it's German but that's all they know about the clock except their father had it for 38 years. Any Thoughts.

With out seeing the movement I can't really say. Its a strike, that top doesn't look right it looks more like the sort of thing you see on those German wall clocks which many confuse them with the proper Vienna wall clocks. Take that off and the case looks right.

Here is an example of the type of German wall clock.

    • Ross yes we all love the forum and yes a lot of these facebook groups are awful and will never compare to what we have here. But facebook is exactly what you make it for yourself, some let the world know what they had for tea and if they threw it up again lol. It took me years to enter into the realm of facebook and 95 % of it i ignore completely,  i use it to my advantage, I'm not an addict of it like most of the world is. My profile contains absolutely nothing about me, its not even my real name, all it is for me is a vehical for me to access information, if i dont like what i see i ignore it. You develop an attitude of indignation towards the vast majority of it.
    • No, It's still showing the "20 Micron" between the lugs.
    • Thanks for the replies.  @Neverenoughwatches  If you have something that looks suitable, let me know and I'll get some dimensions.  Thanks.
    • Thinking.  Mark has said he would be here for the foreseeable.  I have looked at other watch forums. One will not let me join as my 'browser' is not set? Another feels very complicated. Another has showing of collections of Rolex etc, all vying to show what they have. Not what they do for watch servicing. And, the criticism of others is so prevalent.  I asked a question and received, "Read a book more often" as a reply. I was given advice and constructive criticism by members, who advised the book, but realised as a result of my dyslexia, my difficulties. And so spent time assisting me.  I like and enjoy this forum. I am at 2 1/2 years into my self imposed 5 year apprenticeship. Averaging 10 hrs per week. I can do virtually anything that needs to be done. I still lack some tools. DIY skills makes a lot of things available to me. Someone made the comment about 'Facebook'? Open my life for the inspection of others? No thank you.
    • Come on chaps i need some ideas, i have the right staff for the movement, i can probably make up another hairspring and balance wheel with some effort involved, which might not run time accurate but i can deal with that. What I'm really stuck with is an oversized roller hole to fit onto the staff. I cant make a roller, so i have to make this one fit, which is looking like a fastening in repair with adhesive.  Getting the staff in centrally is going to be difficult, I'm guessing the space around the staff is about 50 microns. My other option is to track down a different staff with a better roller fitting profile but match profile sizes elsewhere,  or another correct roller, I'm sure this one has been broached out. It may not even be the correct roller, the staff sits really low inside it. I could just rodico the roller on and then test to see how it interacts with the fork.
