Hello all,

My name is Roger Leighton. I have inherited an Omega Seamaster with the 1342 calibre.

The watch worked but would occasionally pause for an hour at 7 o'clock.

Sent it to Omega who returned it as unrepairable. 

Can anyone advise if these is a chance of getting it going again?

Hello Roger and welcome to the forum.  as the watch is electric/mechanical  we have to consider both areas.  does the watch stop at 7 oclock all the time, you say it pauses for an hour does it then restart on its own.  or do you have to do anything to restart it   we say 7 oclock is that am or pm or both. can you post some pictures of the watch also    thanks

So it stops every 12 hrs for an hour then resumes for the next 12 and repeats the cycle.  First thing to do is to change the battery or verify that its good, but better to change it. the fact that it stops and re starts its self would lead me to think is more electrical than a mechanical fault, ie  if it was a damaged tooth or dirt in the mech it woul stop and stay stopped untill it was shaken or the hands moved. start with the battery and see what the result is.   It takes a 388 battery  renata are the best.

So the fault is the same with a new battery. One other thing i would do is to put it on a line release tool snd run the hands to check for blockages in the gear train. These are relativly inexpensive tools found on ebay. Two examples of which I have attached below. Remove the battery and place on the machine press button  If the hands spin round past the 7am and 7pm  ok then replace the battery and re try.    cheers

The above tester goes for between $40 and $50. Used versions of the watch are upwards of $400. Seems like spending a little on the tester would be worthwhile. If you are interested in fooling with watch repair long-term, go for it.

I've already spent more on various tools and haven't even gotten a single movement started back up...

      Hi John, The most important parameter of the spring is the thickness. The lenght is something that one would not consider as obligatory, as relatively big variations will not affect anything in significant way. The barrel size is related to the barrel and has nothing to do with the spring. Yes, the spring is designed to work in a barrel and the size of the barrel matters, but let this parameter be chosen by the movement manyfacturer, not by the sping manyfacturer who doesn't have idea in what kind of movement the spring will work. Sometimes the washer in which the spring arrives will be bigger than the barrel and there will be no way to just push the spring in the barrel and be happy. Well, if this is a problem for somebody, then probably He is a person with to many problems that will be verry hard to help to in any way. By the way, why You are changing the spring? Is the old one broken?

      As a beginner, I’ve found this forum invaluable. I doubt I would’ve persevered without its support. I’ve had the confidence to attempt things that seemed to me impossible only because I knew there were patient and giving folks gathered around this watering hole, available to share their skill.    I would very much like to know where to go if this one dries up and everyone needs to decamp.  There’s something special about the folks gathered in this group.  How to keep in touch?
