Helvetia

Yes it all looks wrong, I checked out the movement on Ranft and the jewel on the watch is held down by a right dogs breakfast. The symmetry is wrong and as you said there is a screw head there, Definitely giving that one a miss.

Cheers,

Vic

I see what you mean George, there is a resemblance after all. I think I may have mistaken reflections in the jewel as additional pieces of the retaining fingers. Well spotted. The movement is advertised as a Helvetia 830 and the jewel retainer on the Ranft pic is totally different but that is not unusual really, I may have a punt after all but I have eyes on some other stuff as well - we will see !

Cheers,

Vic

It does look like the sort of screw that I would lose with monotonous regularity.

I recently bought a variety box of 250 recycled watch screws some of which need viewing under the microscope to see them properly, actually pretty handy and reasonable quality.

I reckon it is a replacement but the head is too big.  Trouble is you never know about these things till they are in your hands.  The watch is working but if for instance the original got lost, and someone retapped the hole for a more common screw size and that is what we are seeing I could never sell it on in case someone thought I had done it.  Anyway I will steer clear I think there are loads more Helvetia watches in the sea - or should that be fishes ?

Cheers,

Vic

    • Hello everyone. My name is Gary.  I’ve been hobby fixing for just a few months now and have turned out several Seiko 7009A, 6309 and 7s26 movements with varying success.  my first movement was a tiny Cyma 424. (In at the deep end for size).  I’m currently working on a sentimental Garret ETA 2391 for my Father in law.
    • Thanks for all the replies.  I'll investigate further.  I never noticed the lip and @Michael1962, I think I will have to form a tool to undo the ring and see what happens. I'll see if I can get some more pics.
    • Hi John, The most important parameter of the spring is the thickness. The lenght is something that one would not consider as obligatory, as relatively big variations will not affect anything in significant way. The barrel size is related to the barrel and has nothing to do with the spring. Yes, the spring is designed to work in a barrel and the size of the barrel matters, but let this parameter be chosen by the movement manyfacturer, not by the sping manyfacturer who doesn't have idea in what kind of movement the spring will work. Sometimes the washer in which the spring arrives will be bigger than the barrel and there will be no way to just push the spring in the barrel and be happy. Well, if this is a problem for somebody, then probably He is a person with to many problems that will be verry hard to help to in any way. By the way, why You are changing the spring? Is the old one broken?
