Barrel Arbor Battle

tpt

Recommended Posts

I'm having a pig of a time with my first rebuild.

the barrel arbor has a larger diameter than the centre coil of the mainspring and I just can't get it to sit down in position and engage the spring and pop through the case hole enabling me to get the barrel closed.

Are there any tricks of the trade someone could tell me about here?

I must have watched Mark's film of him doing it 20 times now and I can't see that he has this problem in the slightest.

It's the Seiko 5 7009A still.

thanks!

Tim

I use a small pin vice to hold the arbour tightly.

This lets me manipulate it easily into place by pushing the arbour in at a slight angle while slightly turning against the direction of winding. Once you have it in place, turn the arbour in the direction of winding to ensure that the hook has located properly with the spring before removing the pin vice and closing the barrel. :)

The pin vice will scar the barrel arbor, the barrel arbor has a hole in the middle which will not svar the arbor, if scared you will have wear on the barrel where it touches the arbor and possibly a weak amplitude

    • Yep, i pulled that up as well when i was looking,  there is definitely parts out there if you are prepared to go out and find them.  I watched that video years ago, I'm not so sure about probing the coil like that. If you are going to touch the coil use the side of the probe or at least shape a nice round end to it.

    • Hi. In the picture not only does it depict that the wheel is bent but also the plate or is that due to th angle of the picture.  Already received very good advise so I will butt out.
