Hamilton 946 pocket watch size 18s

Question

Help!  I need parts for a 1905 Hamilton  946 pocket watch size 18s.  Specifically I need a lower balance jewel, upper center wheel jewel, and a mainspring.  I know these are hard to find.  I will consider buying a "parts" watch if it has some or all the needed parts.  Any and all help appreciated.

Have you considered asking in the NAWCC forums?

You to try posting in the pocket watch section but as it's a watch repair question did have better luck posting in the watch repair section that's found at the link below. The balance jewel in the main spring or easy if you need the part numbers I can look those up the center will jewel that's going to be the issue. Then getting a another watch the steel parts from can be an issue. I'd have to go and look up your specific balance staff in jewel probably not as bad as Elgin I think Hamilton had specific part numbers for each staff for instance. Unlike Elgin did have one part number for one staff that came in several different pivots sizes and occasionally has some other variations also. But even with that an American pocket watches a lot of times the parts are made to fit because manufacturing isn't quite as exact as you thought it should be that's why the center wheel jewel will probably be an issue.

    • Hi   can you post some picture of the movement and or the make and caliber,  As its a clone /fake  the movement could one of several that they use.  If the hands are just moving when you turn the watch by hand they maybe just loose      if they turn whilst you are winding or the automatic is trying to wind the watch during wear that,s a different storey and is likely to be a broken pallet/fork or one of the wheels is adrift.
    • Hi  For your information   the whole  Miyota OS20  movement costs £15 from Cousins, they usually come with a stem attached. All you need is to recover the crown. If the crown is brass this can be done by dissolving the broken steel stub in a solution of ALUM which will eat the steel but not the brass.
    • If all wheels turn while winding, ten your pallet fork is not doing what it supposed to do. You can see it from back side - next to balance wheel.
    • Thank you for the additional documentation.  Yes, there were 3 parts to the video taking through disassembly and reassembly which were very useful and without them I would have never attempted the repairs.  Thank you for the advice on photos.  I have done that along the way and it has served useful.  Agree, it is a Rolex, but once you get past that, it just like any other mechanical device; just much smaller and finer parts than I have ever worked with before. 🙂
    • Hi  I think now is the time to study Mark Lovic's  (our Host) videos on the 3135 and build up from there before any real damage is done. to that effect I have attached the service document an two parts sheets should parts be require.    I believe there were three parts taking you through the disassembly and re assembly stage by stage.  If and when you decide to do the job take plenty of photos at the various stages as a memory aid and for future reference.  It may be a Rolex but its no different to any other watch of this type and will require some time and care.  good luck.
