That is definitely a possibility. Even with a proper timegrapher, you sometimes need to adjust the "gain" settings to get a proper reading depending on the thickness of a case. Still, I wouldn't rule out magnetism. Also sounds plausible to me. The Chinese blue demagnetisers are cheap and worth getting (IMHO).

I just got a Timex Macguyver field watch for under $20US. From photos, condition looks pretty worn, but I'm happy enough because all my past attempts at buying one of these ended when I wouldn't go over $75. And it will be my first watch with a 2 piece stem, though not my first plastic monobloc Timex. (the weird UFO Fun Timer series has a little threaded nylon plug in the back to reach the stem screw instead of a split stem)

@VWatchie, @praezis thank you both. Basically, length alone only worsens the situation when barrel width and/or most importantly spring thickness are constants. In my case, I was questioning the fact that both length and thickness are of bigger values for the same barrel diameter. But after reading an article, I realized I would not have gained anything. In my case, I would have had the same overall output or worse. Article: https://www.vintagewatchstraps.com/mainsprings.php

I think the metal cap for want of a better word is soft iron to protect from magnetism. It is also the only thing holding the movement in the case. -

To me Gun metal is a type of bronze, used of course for making fire arms.
