Gold Filled Pocket Watch Case Tarnish

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

You will see in the photos below, that I have a gold filled pocket watch case that appears to be really tarnished. Or is it? The reason I ask is that I'm not sure whether the case was varnished to protect it, or whether it truly is tarnish that has built up over the years; whatever it is, it's a really tough coating that appears to be really difficult to remove. The obvious question I have is what do I do to restore the case to a consistent look? Any help you can give will be appreciated.

It's currently smoky in Edmonton from the Fort McMurray fire, which is still growing unfortunately, but it puts things into perspective - a tarnished watch case is nothing in comparison to having your house burned to the ground.

I don't think it can be 'restored' unless you re-plate entire case. As szbalogh said the base metal maybe copper or brass,(and the gold is just worn off) terminology between gold filled and gold plated is often mistaken for one in the same, suggest search on those terms, Try NAWCC, lots of good case info and perhaps consult of reputable jeweler who is familiar with plating. Might be pricey! BOL on the current situation at your location.

I use a cream called "PEEK" to remove tarnish and shine up the watch. Need to be careful because it will also remove some of the gold if you apply to much or for too long. You can get it at canadian tire. I have a son who is in Edmonton, armoured corps squadron commander. I think he is safe.
