Hmmm, great idea - I purchased a smaller one with a view to using it for softening shellac, however, have not tried it yet. Looks like it might be useful.

I have been using gut on my early 19th century clocks for decades. Almost all have brass weights. I had to replace a set of pulls on an 1810 English clock with gut about 40 years ago. It has heavy brass weights but the pulls still look great. I suppose galvanized steel cable will save you a job every 100-150 years or so, which is probably the lifespan of the gut. The clocks deserve a little attention.

Hi! My name is David and I work on watches as a hobby in retirement. I got started about a year ago when I found a handful of broken watches in my late father’s belongings. It was an interesting mix of low to high end pieces, almost as if my father wanted to leave me an on-ramp to the hobby. I’ve worked on roughly a dozen so far, each a different movement and each with its own unique challenges. As a retired engineer, I enjoy building and fixing things so this is a great hobby for me.
