Silver Fob Watch

hi, I'm new to this site, and am only just starting to collect watches, I'm also a novice at repairing them, but I have just pick up a silver fob watch from an local auction, it is running but is gaining about 5 minuets a day and the advance retard lever is fully retarded as far as it will go. from the hallmark stamp the case it appears to be silver with a London import stamp for 1916 ? the movement appears to have no serial number and the only mark on it is a capital C. I will try and attach photo's of it to this topic. would anybody know where this was made and what would cause it to run fast?post-1646-0-01185300-1449914409_thumb.jppost-1646-0-01185300-1449914409_thumb.jppost-1646-0-01185300-1449914409_thumb.jppost-1646-0-01185300-1449914409_thumb.jppost-1646-0-72418000-1449914405_thumb.jppost-1646-0-72418000-1449914405_thumb.jppost-1646-0-29893000-1449914403_thumb.jppost-1646-0-29893000-1449914403_thumb.jppost-1646-0-77082400-1449914400_thumb.jppost-1646-0-77082400-1449914400_thumb.jppost-1646-0-10318700-1449914398_thumb.jp

The initial cause of a watch running faster and faster is probably dirt - it needs a clean and service. You might think dirt makes it go slower - it will, eventually, but if the regulator is hard over and won't slow it down any more, that shows it's mucky! It might need demagnetizing - but I say "dirt".

Absolutely, I agree about the service part AND the demagnetize part as per Will! Not in that order necessarily. If after that the problem persists, check the hairspring for shorts...also test on several positions and look for jewel wear/damage while servicing (as a matter of course). After all, it is an old watch.

Cheers,

Bob
