Hey guys. I'm currently having trouble with my handwound Hamilton Khaki Mechanical with the H-50 movement. I usually give it a full wind when I take it out of the box (which if I remember correctly was around 45 winds)
Then I would rewind it in the morning which usually took 12-15 winds. When I feel resistance I stop winding - that's what my watchmaker told me and what I read and hear online all the time.

Well, all of a sudden my watch doesn't reach that point of resistance anymore! I can keep winding as if it was an automatic movement. The watch is still running pretty well at -10s/d

Now, without having opened it I wonder what could be the problem here. I have a hunch that my son might have taken the watch and overwound it while I was not looking but in that case - how is the watch still running?


Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I'm fairly new to the watch repair hobby and I'm not sure I want to try my hands on this watch – I'm still not done butchering my first project…

Welcome to the forum, enjoy.. Normally if a hand wound watch does not fully wind ie just keeps winding there is an error with mainspring, either slipping around its winding arbour or the mainspring is broken.

Hi and welcome.

First of all, check the power reserve. If the watch is runing, this means the spring is attached to the barrel arbor. If there is no end of winding, this probably means that the spring is not attached to the barreland it's outer end is slipping. In such case, the watch will run, but the power reserve will be small - about several hours

Thanks for your feedback guys.

I gave the watch (what I consider to be) a full wind and will check the power reserve. I think the last time I tried, it ran for at least 48 hours so this will take a while. As the watch IS running I think the arbor IS attached to the main spring. I was suspecting that maybe the main spring is slipping inside the barrel much like it would in an automatic watch.

      Do you use an ultrasonic cleaner or a watch cleaning machine? I've been considering trying out the L&R liquids you mention in my "ancient" Elma watch cleaning machine. However, I worry that these liquids are too toxic and smell too much without adequate ventilation. Where I live it is normally too cold to work with this outdoors, but a few months a year it could work. At some point, I tried Elma's Suprol Pro and almost passed out from the fumes. It comes with a "narcotic effect" warning. How bad are the L&R fluids in this respect?

      I've removed the movement and left it on a windowsill. I'm in north east England, so not very sunny today 😥 however I'll give it a few days and then try a new battery. The document you sent claims the movement is the same as the C700 with regards to parts and assembly. I've managed to find an exploded view of a C700 and some troubleshooting instructions. So if a new battery doesn't work in a few days I'll strip the watch and test the electronic circuit unit. No doubt it will require cleaning and oiling anyway. Thanks again for your help @watchweasol

      Hi. That explains it, done that myself.  Leve the movement open with the back off and battery out for a few days in the sun and let it dry naturally, re fit new battery and try again if  it is not successful the circuit block may be toast,  Better if you can get the movement out of the case for drying what is your location

      Thanks for that. He's worn the watch daily for the last 20 years, he said he didn't even think about it being on his wrist, because it's always there. He had a shower and when he got out he noticed the crystal has condensation on the inside. I may have exaggerated when I said it was FULL of water 😅 I removed the movement from the case last night and there's no sign of water on the coil or battery, however the dial has dried water spots on it. I'm not sure about stripping the movement further, I've never done anything with a quartz movement. I tried looking for a donor movement but they seem to be practically non existent. Even Jules Borel doesn't list this movement in their parts catalogue
