Regulator characteristics

I'm working on a small clock for which I need to make a replacement regulator i.e. an elongated open wire loop that is moved by the F/S lever over the part of the hair/balance spring adjacent to the stud to adjust the speed of the movement. Are there any rules of thumb for the dimensions of the loop (& the gap through which the spring is seated) and for the gauge of wire to use in relation to the width/thickness of the spring?

The main thing is to make sure that what ever the position you have the regulator the hairspring is free and stays in shape.

Thanks. If I understand this correctly, the hairspring should not be in contact with the regulator wire when the clock is stopped; but it should make intermittant contact when the spring is pulsating thus effectively lengthening or shortening its length according to the position of the lever.
