Help needed with Sunburst & polishing 1975 Omega Mark II case.

Recommended Posts

Hello All;

I'm slowly getting to (hopefully) the conclusion of my multi-year restoration project of a 1975 Omega Speedmaster Mark II.

The first time I worked on this watch was in 2017, and it came to me, from its first owner, in this state;

Since water ingress was suspected, I did the initial service of the movement, replaced the mineral glass crystal and after that, the watch went back to its owner;

Currently, the watch has become my property 😃

I've given the movement another service and I've started restoring the original hands, as the generic hands are just not of the same quality.

Once I've done that, the next thing will be the watch-case.

As you can see on the first picture above, the watch-case was, and still is, in a sorry state; well used, beaten up, and has scratches and dents.

The front, or top of the case used to have, and supposed to have, a sunburst finish. On either side of the case, under an angle of say 45 degrees, there are strips with "mirror-finish" and both sides of the case do have "satin-finish".

The sunburst finish on the front is nearly worn off and the sides do have scratches and deep dents.

The back cover could also do with a "fresh-up";

How to go about this?

Can it be done by myself and if so, what is required? (I do have the special tool required to remove & set the crystal).

Or, would it be better to get professional help? If so, who could do that here in Europe and what would the cost be?

Anybody any suggestions ?

Hope to hear ...... 😉

Perhaps too "Mickey Mouse" with a 11.5cm disk, but I like to try this small 2nd hand machine.

It probably needs a speed-control modification with a triac, but that's a bonus & added fun 🤩

We'll see how we get on ...... 🤗
