Eta 2892 escape wheel for Omega 1120

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Just had a tricky Omega 1120 fault find after the click spring moved and jammed up the winding. Sorted that and then struggled to spot the slight dishing on the barrel top which took out the arbor end shake and probably caused some restriction on the mainspring. I serviced this watch a year ago and my friend has worn it happily all the time. Working tired this time l snapped the escape wheel pivot - idiot. I’ve tried a generic 2892 wheel and it’s running at 180 amp ish. Can anyone say for sure that this part is not the same for both movements ?

In You place, I wouldn't count on tricky tables data and somebody's else miss of success to do this replacement. As the both movements are in You hands, You are the one that can say if such replacement is possible or not.

You don't say anything about if the new wheel rotates free and the endshakes are normal. And, You don't say if the new wheel interacts with the lever as it should.

I would compare the width of the pallet stones of both levers and the slope of impulse planes. If no difference notised, this will generally mean, that if even there is difference between wheels, readjustment of pallet stones position would be able to bring the things to normal.  If there are differences, then may be replacement of the table of original wheel on the pinion of generic one is possible, or replacement of the lever with the generic one, if it interacts with the balance as it should...

For questions like this I like the look at a website like the link below where we can cross reference parts to see what they're compatible with or not. You'll see a reference that not everything is compatible with the generic. But looking at the second link for the escape wheel it looks like it is compatible.

Out of curiosity service did a year ago and why are you servicing it now? Did it develop a problem?

Many thanks for that detailed reply. Yes I’ve checked the wheel has good endshake and all the other fitments. Under the microscope the pallet actions look normal and both wheels appear the same. I can only measure simple diameters. Jist need to know if anyone had tried the this swop since findind a 1120 wheel will be expensive and difficult compared to the comonly available 2892 version.

Many Thanks for that John. In answer to your curiosity it came back with a windind problem and timekeeping issue - bit slow. I found the click spring in the bridge had partially dislodged and was causing plenty of trauma. No evidence l could see why this should have happened since all was tight. and free to move. I’ve done a couple of these. before with no trouble but it’s. ot the most robust design. Watch is 20 years old.

    • I use on of these Eclipse demagnetisers. https://www.eclipsemagnetics.com/products/workholding-systems/table-top-demagnetiser/ I got fed up with those Mickey Mouse blue things and went industrial You can pick them up on eBay from between £70 to £100. They will demagnetise anything. I mean, anything, from a hairspring to a hammer head. The table is about 5 x 6 inches. You are not going to find anything close to being this good! It will demagnetise the biggest and chunkiest of cases with the movement inside. You'll never wonder again if your demagnetiser did the job.
    • Hi Dean, The solution with the alum for the broken screw is good and is generally used by watchmakers from many years, but You have to take off ALL steel parts from the plate. In some movements, the post for the minute wheel, for example, is made of steel. Deeping partly the plate works too, but some marks may left on the line where the solution doesn't cover the plate. Heating the solution is needed to accelerate the process. With the years, a rich collection of screws gathers and then finding the needed screw is not a problem. But till then it will be helpfull if You get some assorted screws lot. The other option is making screws. This is usually for the ones with specific form and sizes that doesn't meet often. But the skill of making screws is something that will never be unnecessary
    • Haha yes you do have to reel in your bidding enthusiasm Michael. I use a " not enough time policy " to restrict myself or else known as sniper bidding. Decide what you are most prepared to bid and place it 7 seconds before the end, cross your fingers ,job done . The price paid here i would say was top  figure another day could have been $40
    • The question is did Baum and Mercier use that movement.  I know they used other ebouches. I  can't find any evidence that they didn't but that doesn't mean they didn't.
    • Well my VARIAC experiment worked sort of. By lowering the input voltage I was able to dramatically lower the magnetic field. However try as I might I was not able to demag either anvil. Even wrapped in bubble wrap to ensure it passed through the opening at equa-distance in the hole, the ends still come out highly magnetized. So time to throw in the towel and move on to purchasing the Chinese Elma-like unit from Amazon (I don’t do Ali express since I can’t return stuff if not satisfied like i can on Amazon).
