Hi!

Ready for my first question here! Just came across this Mont Blanc diver (although not thinking there is any association with the pencil brand) and thought it looked really cool and in a nice size. Came with a ETA 2782 automatic movement, 25 jewels.

However the bezel is not attached to the case anymore, and I haven't really done any case repairs before. Do you think it is repairable?

Googling "loose bezel" just returns a lot of info on how to TIGHTEN an already attached bezel. Not fixing a really loose bezel. It just sits on the case. (Maybe there is another expression for this?)

Both the case and the bezel have a groove.

In the case groove there was some residue, don't know if it was an old dried gasket or just old glue. You can see it just below the bezel here:

I tried inserting one these springs from an Ebay case bezel into the bezel groove, but got no action when trying to press it on. That's the extent of my bezel knowledge.

Anyone came across anything similar and have any recommendations?? Before I resort to my last resort and just glue it on, living with a fixed bezel (as I won't be going anywhere near diving with this anyway - and for pasta cooking I can still just use my phone timer)

Hi again,

Seems I'm at my own here 🙂

Anyway if someone else has the se problem best to let everyone know where I'm at and a possible solution. Trial and error has led me to believe that it should be a bezel spring there, since the one I have fits and sets the bezel onto the case. But veeery loosely. So I guess I'll have to try to make my own with a thicker spring wire!

However I read on some other forum something along the lines that "70's bi-directional bezels were mostly pressure fit with a bezel gasket".

Would that be just a regular gasket with the "correct" dimensions or is that a special gasket of some kind?

It looks like you have got the right type of bezel spring there but it may not be the right size.

These bezels can be fiddly to fit with the spring in place, especially if you don't have a press and are trying to do it by hand. You have to make sure that the spring stays properly located in the groove in the case all the way round, and then have to apply a fair bit of pressure, which is where the press comes in.

    • I think what peter means oh is once he has fitted the hands and  checked for  alignment if them and that they dont foul, how does he then hold the movement to remove the stem in order to case up. The dial cannot be laid on a cushion or in a movement holder as the hands will get damaged. This can be quite tricky for a beginner, what i do is  to stand the movement on edge on a rubber pad so it doesn't slip. Hold the top edge with one finger then my dominant hand uses 3 fingers to press the stem release and flick out the stem. See below peter, leave off the second hand as this is the longest and gets caught the most, then fit it once the stem is out.
    • Yes I understand that. What I’m asking is, after the hands have been fitted, it’s been checked that the hands do not touch etc. then I need to remove the stem to fit the movement in the case. I have the push type, I need to turn it upside down and push the setting lever post and pull the stem out. But of course the dial and hands are in place and I have a glossy dial with lume dots and I do not want to cause any damage while it’s upside down pushing on the post of the setting lever.
    • You have answered your own question. You just push the setting lever nipple in or if its the screw in type unscrew it a little. You should always remove any hands and the dial before putting it in your movement holder.
    • Did the old battery leak and damaged the circuit board? Can you post some photos of where the buttons make contact on the circuit board.  Try cleaning the gold fingers on the board with alcohol and also the conductive rubber strips behind the LCD display panel.
    • How do you safely remove the stem after fitting hands? I’m talking about the push type setting lever you need to push to release the stem. Some dials can be intricate, glossy finish, lume dots etc. and placing it in the movement holder can be quite risky and cause damage.
