Quartz Battery Change

I always change batteries on my watches. I started doing it now on watches for friends, coworkers and family. Sometimes when I change a battery, on both old and new watches, when I replace the old with a new battery, sometimes the watch won't run. So, to encourage it, I have to take out the battery and re-install it, then its when the watch starts. Any idea why this happens?

Do you handle the batteries with bare fingers?

Do you give them a wipe before installing?

no, I never touch them with bare fingers. However, I never wipe them. I think I'm gonna have to start doing that. I guess I should also wipe down the contacts of pos and neg of movement. Thanks!
