Hello everyone,

I have this Armani watch and am trying to replace the battery but the case back wouldn't come off. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi what methods have you tried. Is it a snap back if so a case knife will do, but some of these cases are tight. Look for an indent or marks on the case perimeter from previous entries. you may have to use a sharp blade to raise the back enough for the knife .  If a screw on try the sticky ball or a nut superglued to the back, left overnight then unscrew with a spanner Nut removed using acetone  Bear in mind getting the back back on if its a press fit will require a back fitting press.    some picture of he case from the sides would be helpful

Hi Watchweasol. Many thanks for your reply. I tried the various tools I have in the toolkit (photo attached). The impression I got was that it is a snap back but there are no indents or marks on the case perimeter (actually now there are marks all over the place the result of my unsuccessful attempts to open it) ? I even viewed the perimeter of the case with my smartphone camera to zoom in the details. But no indents whatsoever. Maybe it would be a good idea to try with the nut glued to the back.

I have attached a photo of the case from its side, and also the toolkit I was referring to.

Once again thank you for your help.

Opening tight snap backs is beginner's first problem. None of the tools in your kit will help except the case holder that is of the sturdy type. Basically you either need a good amount of precise wedging with a strong blade, or work patiently around with less pressure with a sharp blade. Especially the first method is quite dangerous so there are lever type tools for that, have a look below. And for the second one I suggest an Xacto knife, or sharpen that yellow handle Japanese type. Do not use a safety razor, wear leather gloves for safety.

Then most likely you will need a caseback press to close it.

Thanks guys. With some more determination and patience, working around with a sharp blade and then using the wedge in the toolkit (the one with the yellow handle)... Once again thanks and am attaching the photo of the end result.

    • Hello Tom and welcome to the forum.
    • Hah! Well, California will have to do. Lived in TX for a brief period back in the early 70s, though, so maybe that counts. 🙂 Funny you should mention making vacuum tubes- I've actually tinkered with that! It's REALLY tough to do, and I've never made one more complicated than a simple diode that barely worked, but I have played around at it. But there's just no infrastructure for vacuum tube fabrication. I can get a lathe and learn how to use it to make complex parts, and while it might take a while to learn- and money to get the equipment, of course- it is possible to do more or less "off the shelf". But vacuum tubes, not so much. There are a few folks out there doing some crazy cool work with bespoke tubes, but they have setups that are far beyond what I can manage in my environment and it's mostly stuff they built by hand. I also have been playing with making piezoelectric Rochelle Salt crystals to replace ancient vacuum tube turntable needles- nobody's made those commercially for probably 60 years. I'm a sucker for learning how to do weird things no one does any more so I can make things no one uses work again. (I think this is drifting off the topic of lathes, lol).
    • You shoulda been born in Texas. Tough to make a vacuum tube though. You can substitute with a MOSFET eq ckt I guess. I was playing around making a pinion the other day. More to it than meets the eye.
    • Well, turns out it was a fake bezel! The crystal is domed mineral glass and I was able to find a cheap replacement that should be here in two days.  I used my crappy little press to pop out the cracked crystal, Ill give the case a good cleaning in the meantime and do a once over on the movement.
