Hi all,

I came across this 40's JLC P478 and wanted to know your opinions on the dial. It can what seem to be lume dots on each hour mark - more prominent on the 3, 6, 9 and 12 hour marks. I cannot find any other reference image of a dial that looks like this.

DO you think it is original or aftermarket? My feeling is aftermarket as they cover the numerals. If so it would have been soon after purchase as they have aged with the dial.

What would the implication of these dots being after market be on the watches price?

Thank you!

Hi there it should look something like this, someone has added the lume. As for value it will be degraded. By how much depends on a few factors such as history, the movement condition etc. These are quiet valuable and a nice piece of history. Maybe you could remove the lume.

Thanks for the info Graziano.

This sort of confirms my suspicions about the lume being added aftermarket. They are beautiful watches but I think it would bother me too much knowing that it has been modified.

I will look into having the lume removed, but then I suppose the dial underneath will not have been aged the same as the rest of the dial.

The lume may not have been there long enough to make a difference. It should just pop off the dial with a piece of pegwood gently pushing against the side of dot . Use Magnification. If you don't feel comfortable with that then get a watchmaker to do it, or you could just leave it.

Hope this helps
