Mifloyd1-The other day I dropped a very small

mainspring arbor from an antique watch onto

the hairy monster and thought "thats it another

one for the spares box". Then I thought -magnet!

Duly bought a 4" item on the bay. When it arrived

I attatched it to my other half's pick up tongs and

approached the hairy. A couple of sweeps-an

audible click and yes! a mainspring arbor back

on my bench!!

+1 for mangling hairsprings when removing stubborn balance cocks - I wish I had better technique for that. Killed quite a few watches that way. Nothing worse than the sight of a balance cock dangling from a hairspring...

Also if anyone can show me a movement holder that doesn't let go at the crucial moment, I'll be forever in their debt.

Also Jaxa tools slipping and leaving huge scratches on the solid gold back of a watch makes me feel like giving up....and yet...

I've been bitten so many times with this happening. The movement went right through its movement ring while tightening a screw. Inevitability, something else also comes off.

These are a few of mine. The one with the movement is a Bergeon as well as the small one on the right. The shinny one that is like the Bergeon is a Horotec and the others, who knows. The large one is for the largest pocket watch movements and is the same as the Bergeon but cheap. I like the Bergeon style the best. The feet are at the furthest point for support.

EDIT to add, the movement is a 12 size Illinois movement for size comparison.

I'm embarrassed saying this, but I know I'm among understanding colleagues.

Hi Milfloyd,

Here's a little story for you mate.

When Thomas Edison was creating the light blub he ran into the same issue again and again.  To create light from a filament you need to run it so hot that it becomes Incandescent; but how do you achieve this, and what material can survive this punishing temperature?

After months of failures, someone said to him, "It seems your attempts at creating light in a blub is a failure."  To which he answered, “I have not failed. I've just discovered 10,000 ways that won't work.”

If Tommy had given up on the light blub at attempt 9,999 he would not have gone down in history as it's inventor, would he?

You my friend have not failed, and have nothing to be embarrassed about.  You've just learnt many ways not to do it. :)

With the parts I've been ordering I might as well have bought a complete movement.

Consider it an "investment" in your education ... knowledge rarely comes cheaply, and that is why its so valuable.

    • Do you use an ultrasonic cleaner or a watch cleaning machine? I've been considering trying out the L&R liquids you mention in my "ancient" Elma watch cleaning machine. However, I worry that these liquids are too toxic and smell too much without adequate ventilation. Where I live it is normally too cold to work with this outdoors, but a few months a year it could work. At some point, I tried Elma's Suprol Pro and almost passed out from the fumes. It comes with a "narcotic effect" warning. How bad are the L&R fluids in this respect?
    • I've removed the movement and left it on a windowsill. I'm in north east England, so not very sunny today 😥 however I'll give it a few days and then try a new battery. The document you sent claims the movement is the same as the C700 with regards to parts and assembly. I've managed to find an exploded view of a C700 and some troubleshooting instructions. So if a new battery doesn't work in a few days I'll strip the watch and test the electronic circuit unit. No doubt it will require cleaning and oiling anyway. Thanks again for your help @watchweasol
    • Hello and welcome to the forum,     Enjoy
    • Hi. That explains it, done that myself.  Leve the movement open with the back off and battery out for a few days in the sun and let it dry naturally, re fit new battery and try again if  it is not successful the circuit block may be toast,  Better if you can get the movement out of the case for drying what is your location
    • Thanks for that. He's worn the watch daily for the last 20 years, he said he didn't even think about it being on his wrist, because it's always there. He had a shower and when he got out he noticed the crystal has condensation on the inside. I may have exaggerated when I said it was FULL of water 😅 I removed the movement from the case last night and there's no sign of water on the coil or battery, however the dial has dried water spots on it. I'm not sure about stripping the movement further, I've never done anything with a quartz movement. I tried looking for a donor movement but they seem to be practically non existent. Even Jules Borel doesn't list this movement in their parts catalogue
