Friday Is Wittnauer Day!

This is a nice, dressy Wittnauer "Revue 73" watch from the - I think - 1940s. I particularly like the quartered face and the "Egyptian" case design. Wittnauer was, like Gruen and Bulova, an American make but with movements manufactured in a Swiss factory for export, and to be cased in America. Wittnauer was originally an independant company which was then bought out by Longines. Contrary to what you might expect, Wittnauer production continued to be independant of Longines - though they both existed side by side in the same factory!

I buy carefully, and often from sellers who I've used on a few occasions. There's a seller on eBay who specialises in Wittnauers, Longines, Bulovas and Gruens from the 1940s-1960s, and his stuff is usually immaculate. They're not cheap, either. I also have a friend - an amateur watch repairer of 40 years' experience - who lives about an hour away from me, and who is very good at cleaning and servicing them. When it comes to serious parts for Wittnauer, though, it's sometimes a case of sending to the US for them...
