Waltham Traveller Click and Spring

I have an 1899 Waltham Traveller and when I unscrewed and removed the mainspring wheel, the click jumped over its spring.  I have removed the clip and have been trying to push the spring back while reinstalling the clip but it's so fiddly.  Does anyone have any advice on how to do this without needing three hands?
