I sent my Rolex 16610 to my local watch repair guy and he tells me He can't replace the crystal it would have to go back to Rolex?? as it requires a special press??

I understand it's a thick Sapphire crystal but it has a few nicks and scratches and I would like to replace it. and I'm sure the cost to send it to rolex would be pricey.

help.

Hi Philip, welcome to the forum.

I believe it will be expensive, apart from being Rolex, because depending on the case type/design, the bezel might have to come out, then the whole process of changing the crystal will be performed, with finally a bezel re-installation. It should leave it in mint condition without traces of the work done. But I wouldn't know until you post a picture of the time piece in question. Also, other more knowledgeable fellow members might have better and/or correct suggestions/answers.

Hi Philip,

Is your watch the old type Submariner (16610) or newer cermamic Submariner (116610)?  If it is the ceramic Sub, then he is probably correct.  There are lots of new tools and dies needed to deal with the newer models and a lot of watchmakers who have Rolex parts accounts don't have them yet.  If it is the old style Submariner, then it shouldn't be an issue.  A local repair guy should be able to handle it as long as he has access to the correct crystal and gasket.  You will want to have it pressure tested once it is done to also make sure that the watch still seals.

Also, a RSC won't just replace a crystal.  They don't like to perform piece meal work (for lack of a better phrase).  They will evaluate the watch and insist on a cleaning of the movement if it is time and will then replace the crystal, as well as anything else you would like.  And like you said, it won't be cheap.  Best of luck!
