Seeking Jaguar expert advise.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I was looking for a first car for my youngest daughter, who starts college next year and I've found this one so, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask this questions to the mechanics and mechanic knowledgeable people in our forum:

What is your opinion about an S-type Jaguar, 2005 with 114000 miles?

What would it be worth considering it looks in pretty good condition?

The owner said the dealer changed the transmission and the dashboard gauges (?) and it is still within the 1 year warranty.

Your input is really appreciated!

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Vinn, but as I said, the transmission is already repaired (exchanged) by the dealer. In any case, she won't be able to drive stick shift anyway...I'm stuck with autos no matter what I choose!

I'm just a little put off because of the age and high mileage...any advise or comments? Thanks!

Cheers,

Bob

S-stype Jaguar are essentially Ford based. They are better than X-type, stay away from X-type as they have issues. The best are the XJ8 from what I have seen. The s-type should be fine considering that the trans was just replaced. Make sure you as for paperwork to prove the work was done though.

The XJ8 have BMW transmissions, but they are about 1500-2000$ to replace if they go bad.

The S-type from what I understand is a ford taurus based model from the particular generation that Bob is looking into. The XJ8's from 97-2003 have BMW seven series trans. The only difference is that one piece of the trans (I forget which) is mounted on the opposite side for the Jag, so a straight swap from a BMW is not possible.

Thanks guys, that's very informative. I don't really like Fords! Yes, I'll request the trans paperwork if I decide to go that route...Have you heard of any electrical problems or anything this car may be prone to show?

Cheers,

Bob

    • Hello and welcome.  Click on add files and upload your photos.
    • I have a cheap novelty watch that has sentimental value.  I am guessing the battery is dead but I cannot get the back of the case open. The watch case is gold in color about 33mm with what appears to be a silver back which is 23mm and has "Image Watch Inc California" written on it. I cannot find any notches on it and have tried to pry the silver portion up. I cannot get it to move. I would post an image but do not see a way to do that. I found one on eBay that is similar. If you search for "Image Watches Inc California Unisex Project Wild." I am not promoting this just wanted to give you an idea of what I had. Just frustrated.
    • Welcome. I am also French but living in Waltham Massachusetts near Boston.
    • I've just finished servicing a JLC P478. When I got the watch it was missing the top balance jewels (endstone and cap). I ordered what I thought was the right jewels from Cousins, but what arrived was a jewel in a big brass setting with two screw holes, as if for non-shock proof movement. So I decided to try swapping in jewels from other movements to see if any would work. I tried jewels that matched the diameter of the bottom balance jewels of the JLC- like the Seiko 6119, or Incablocs fro ETA movements, but they were the wrong depth. I ended up with the jewels from a FHF 905. They had a slightly smaller diameter than the JLC ones but they fitted depth-wise perfectly, and the watch ran. But....the watch runs very well in all positions except for two of the vertical positions. I'm talking 290 degrees DU, DD, CD, CL, dropping to 150 degrees CU and CR. So the first question is: could ill-fitting jewels on one end of the balance cause this? If yes, then it would be good to get the correct jewels. I'm not familiar with JLC movements, so if anyone knows what the correct ones are then that would be great.
    • This happens because the air inside the watch expands and contracts, creating moisture. replica watches are more prone to condensation problems because they may not have the same level of quality and precision in their seals as authentic watches. So, to minimize condensation, it's essential to avoid exposing your replica watch to extreme temperature changes. Regular servicing is also crucial. This helps maintain the integrity of the seals and ensures that your watch is in good working condition. If you notice condensation in your replica watch, it's best to take it to a professional watchmaker for inspection and repair.
