Index arm

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm very new to this site having just found it.

My question is , My Elgin 1893 hunter case Pocket watch is running fast. When I went to adjust it I noticed the index arm moves very easily. If I tap on the case it moves. Should I tighten the two screws on the 'top balance end piece" if so how much?  Or The Balance Cock screw?

With a handshake TimFitz

Welcome TimFitz,

If you can get pics posted, might be easier to help, some folks east of atlantic have slightly different terms for watchparts and functions, (not that this is bad) just trying to reduce chance for confusion, also movement model number would greatly appreciated, The two screws on "top balance end piece", might be cap jewel screws, would affect timing, but unlikely cause for fast running, if cap jewel screws were loose, it probably wouldn't run at all, Or very poorly. Did you service this? Clean and overhaul??

Thanks,

Dave

The index arm can be moved very easily from fast to slow. The movement has been cleaned & serviced (not by me) here is a photo.

Why not bringing it back to the watchmaker to set it right.

Agree w/jdm, that would be my first choice, most watch repair persons warranty their repairs, some 6 months, some up to a year after repair.  Adjusting tension on regulator isn't something I'd even attempt, it should move with firmness, well you know not easily! Nice watch, BTW, thanks for sharing.

Would of been helpful if you stated how fast the watch is running? In a 24 hour period .

If it's running very fast the watch may be magnetised or the hair spring has been oil contaminated. In any case the balance assembly needs to come out and looked at. Take it back to your watchmaker !

It was running over an hour fast in 11 hours. I took out the balance assembly, discovered the spring was stuck together, unstuck it, then demagnetized it. Now it's keeping time, as good as can be expected for a watch over 100 years old.

Thanks Everyone who made suggestions. In future I will give as much information as possible.

    • So I found what I believe is the setting lever screw! Am I right in thinking the screw next to the click is the correct one for the setting lever? However if it is, it doesn't fit in the hole which I believe is for it! I can get the lever to sit nicely on the stem and line up with a hole, but the screw only goes as far as the shoulder and stops. It's as though the hole is too small! The dial side has been disassembled by the way, the other wheels are in my tray
    • When faced with say a pocket watch bridge which is cracked, silver soldering to repair is often the only option (hopefully someone wasn't there before hand with soft solder). I can generally do this succesfully and tidily with a small torch and miniscule pieces of silver solder, but on parts which were mercury amalgam gilded the heat can have have a deleterious effect on the finish.   I keep wondering if there's a good way to refinish these - and despite having the needful items would rather avoid using the mercury process.   In the past for electronic work I've gold plated PCBs but this involved gold potassium cyanide solution, which also doesn't realy belong at home. I've read that there are now safer alternatives but couldn't find more detail (and importantly how similar are the results to amalgam gilding, since I wouldn't want to refinish the whole watch). Pointers would be very welcome (and yes, I know solutions containing gold won't be cheap!) Alan

    • Ok so with the great answers for my previous question may I ask what these two attachments are used for. The one with the red knob is I assume used for hand setting the seconds hand? Jon
    • According to Cousins site I need to look at document G22 as I think I need an ATGB at 304 but I cant find this size in G22 doc. The last thing I want to do is order the wrong one😳  Unless I cant see the wood for the trees 😆 I could be looking at the wrong style, I assume its classed as Round plastic Armed  https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/wide-ring-gold-atgb
