I have a 40 year old Swiss Army watch.  I got it for free by clipping coupons from Marlboro boxes (I stopped smoking.....).  It's a great looking watch with a stainless steel case but it stopped working.  I took it to a repair shop, but they say that they cannot purchase the works anymore.  I sent it into Victorinox and they say that the parts are no longer available but really, they just wanna sell me a new watch and offered me a 30% discount.  lol.

I joined this forum, but I have so many other projects going on, I don't really have time to put in the effort to learn a new skill.  I was wondering if there is anyone here who can take on this project.  I will provide reasonable compensation for shipping, parts and time.

Interesting that it doesn't have a special dial? Sometimes referred to as character watches many companies give away watches with their logo on the dial. So basically the watches were free which you had to purchase a lot of something.

Then we would really have to see the inside of the watch.

Does this mean some parts in your watch are damaged?

Is it dead stopped?

When you wind and shake the watch !     Does the seconds hand move and, for how many seconds if it does?

I'd presumed it would be a quartz?

Send it to me if you like. I'd consider myself to be an improving, semi-competent amateur. I don't usually break thinks any more, and if it's a service it needs I can usually cope.

Probably not worth the postage for you though if you are in Arizona. But I'm happy to give it a go - absolutely no guarantee offered but no charge for my time.

Very kind of you but we still don't know what's inside.  If it is a quartz and the battery has leaked it may be beyond repair.  A new movement may be available. We could do with more information from the OP

I probably should have answered some questions before posting my last photo:

In order,

AndyGSI, Thanks for the welcome.  🙂

JohnR725.  Yes it was free, Sir.  No marlboro logo which is kinda why I like it.

NuceJoe and Andy GSI, It's dead stopped.  It's not a winder.  I am able to change the date and time.

Looks clean enough so doesn't appear the battery has leaked.

Can you fit a new battery and see if you get any sort of twitch from the seconds hand as it could just need freeing up.

Failing this there are still replacement movements out their.

Edit

The movement is actually and ISA 1198.103 or 1198/32

AndyGSI,

Do you know how i can which 1198 it is?

Sorry I though the one in this link was correct but that's black on white not white on black although any half decent repairer could just swap the date disc.

Edit

Can you confirm the date and dial are black as I can't find that as an option.

Hello,

So, I have started entertaining myself by researching all the different models of the ISA 1198 watch movement.  Fascinating.  I then returned to my project and purchased a helmet magnifier. I really appreciate the support from you guys for having opened up a whole new world that I didn't know existed.  A big thanks to Bonefixer for the offer, but I think I got bit by the horology bug.... lol.  Time will tell.  I'll let  you guys know how it turns out!

    • Hello Tom and welcome to the forum.
    • Hah! Well, California will have to do. Lived in TX for a brief period back in the early 70s, though, so maybe that counts. 🙂 Funny you should mention making vacuum tubes- I've actually tinkered with that! It's REALLY tough to do, and I've never made one more complicated than a simple diode that barely worked, but I have played around at it. But there's just no infrastructure for vacuum tube fabrication. I can get a lathe and learn how to use it to make complex parts, and while it might take a while to learn- and money to get the equipment, of course- it is possible to do more or less "off the shelf". But vacuum tubes, not so much. There are a few folks out there doing some crazy cool work with bespoke tubes, but they have setups that are far beyond what I can manage in my environment and it's mostly stuff they built by hand. I also have been playing with making piezoelectric Rochelle Salt crystals to replace ancient vacuum tube turntable needles- nobody's made those commercially for probably 60 years. I'm a sucker for learning how to do weird things no one does any more so I can make things no one uses work again. (I think this is drifting off the topic of lathes, lol).
    • You shoulda been born in Texas. Tough to make a vacuum tube though. You can substitute with a MOSFET eq ckt I guess. I was playing around making a pinion the other day. More to it than meets the eye.
    • Well, turns out it was a fake bezel! The crystal is domed mineral glass and I was able to find a cheap replacement that should be here in two days.  I used my crappy little press to pop out the cracked crystal, Ill give the case a good cleaning in the meantime and do a once over on the movement.
