I have an issue with a movement where the hairspring is not lying flat and is subsequently catching on the adjacent centre wheel. It's a Lanco / Langendorf 1022 movement.

I have tried the stud inserted at a few different depths but when I take it off the balance cock it looks quite flat, or at least only slightly cone shaped. There are no obvious kinks that would displace the hairspring vertically at any one point but the spring does look slightly cone shaped when held up with just the weight of the collet. Almost like the entire length of the spring a slightly bent out of flat.

Is this something that I can correct or is it just a sign that the spring has gone past its elastic limit in some way?

I also suspect that the hairspring has been shortened (there was a long tail sticking out of the stud, I took a chunk off the end of this because I thought it might have been fouling the rest of the spring). The terminal curve isn't great either.

Comparing yours to this one that just sold on eBay it looks a little short.

Can you post some photos from the top and side showing how it just sits on the balance.

Thanks for the reply Andy. This is the best I have as I still have the hairspring off the balance at the moment. You can see where the balance arms are relative to the stud and how much 'spare' spring there is reaching back to the balance cock.

Need photo without the balance cock but I think if you've already cut the 'excess' off the spring then it's already toast.

I expect that's the case. Not sure why anyone would re-pin the stud so significantly, leaving the tail most likely repairable.

I will go ahead and find a replacement balance complete.

You can fix cone shaped hairsprings by putting them on a balance tack, and pulling down in the opposite direction. But first, check that the spring is straight coming out of the collet.
