I'm reassembling a fusee pocket watch, and I've reassembled the fusee cone.  Before installing the cotter pin, the cone ratches pretty smoothly and easily.  After installing it, it is rather difficult, or more difficult than I'd expect.  It can still ratchet, and the mechanical advantage of the key would probably make it easier, but I'd like to confirm before committing to reassembling.

The answer to You question is that in assembled state, there should not be significant resistance due friction of the wheel table on the fusee cone and no significant free play should be too.

Hmmm, I'm using all the original parts, including the cotter pin.  I don't know where I'm messing up, unless I am using the wrong pin and or inserting it too far which is causing the collar to press against the bottom of the cone?  I'll try using a new brass pin.

Sorry for the delay.  I don't get any notifications for some reason (neither email nor notifications on the top right bell icon).  I used 8200 on it, and I used a new brass pin and now it ratchets smoothly.

I tend to find that slightly excessive greasing in the cone can affect the smooth operation of the fusee, and reduces the action of the maintaining power spring.  Over time, the grease disperses sufficiently to make it wind smoothly.
