I know that different positions on watches will deliver different secs per day results.... but the question I have is just how much difference should I expect.

For example, I am seeing ranges from -4s/day to -44s/day

I can average the values and adjust accordingly, or lean towards crown down/ face up... but when should I be looking at this as a "problem"?

Excessive end shake on balance pivots.

In vertical position both pivots ride on jewel holes which accompanies increase in friction, thus lower amplitude.

Out of poise balance rims where  the heavy spot hardly  affects oscillations in horizental positions, whereas it effectively does so in vertical.

In case any part is close to rubbing, shakes can make up for the distance it needs to barely rub.

Need to know the watch, it's quality makes a big difference,  jewelled escapement?  tg pictures through positions will help to diagnose, what amplitude ?

We don't know if it's a problem unless we know which watch it is. For Rolex your definitely having a problem but for a pin lever watch your doing outstanding.

Oh and then there is the other problem will understand better if we get a caliber number but most watch companies unless it's a chronometer grade watch only originally adjusted/time these watches typically in the three positions. Pro watch repair point of view you always want to look at the watch and six positions but just remember it was originally regulated in three positions typically

Thanks much, John!

It's probably time for a full service. 😃

I must say that Im finding it quite difficult to find a "local" (USA) watchmaker that just generically services ETA movements reasonably.

I am noodling whether I give it a go...

Says adjusted but doesn't mention in how many positions.

Three positions is standard and wont traditionally get stamped as adjusted, so I guess your watch has 4 to 5 positions adjustments, thus 44s signals the beginning of alarm.

You must have paid pretty penny for it so better safe than sorry.

Just for curiosity's sake I'm pretty sure there are a few watchmakers left in America but I really interpreting here cost what sort of cost you think reasonable for servicing this watch would be?
