Level 2 re-assembly.

I completed the strip down of the movement with no problems.

However, I have a problem regarding the balance upon re assembly.

It does not come to life at all. It will spin a couple of times when I use an air blower.

There is power from the barrel to the escape  wheel. I can install the pallet fork and it will " kick", but when the balance goes in - it does not work. I have checked all pivots etc - all ok. The only issue with the hair spring had was it had slipped out of the regulator pin and I carefully put it back in.

The only other thing I can think of is that I overstretched the spring through bad handling?

Any advice would be welcome. I have removed all the components on that side of the dial twice and still the same problem!

Hi there,

You need to do the free oscillations test.Remove everything from the movement from this side and put back only the balance with it's cock. In this configuration You have best chance to look at the hairspring and see if there is something wrong with it. Turn the balance to 180 degr. and release it to oscillate free. The expectation is about 100 oscillations to full stop if everything with the balance is OK.

The hairspring should not touch anything. Is it concentric? Is there enough free spacece between it and balance spokes and the cock? Is there small 'healthy' axial free paly of the balance?

Thanks for the advice. Indeed the main spring was twisted - frustrated having rebuilt the movement only to screw up the balance placement. 

Good job it is a training movement. Everyday is a schoolday. Thanks again for the input.

I guess this is not the main spring, but the hairspring. Well, we need to see how bad it is. May be it is repairable. Show pictures.

Borkulating a hair spring is a rite of passage. We've all done it. Several times.

You are correct, it was the hairspring. I got it  badly twisted and kinked so I am going to move forward and try to repair some other movements with doner parts from E-Bay. I will take it as a lesson to be extra careful in future.
