I was reading the whole thread as ebay was a website I was interested in long ago. I had 100% positive feedback as a buyer, never sold anything. You may not believe this, but I've never fallen prey to any scammer there. I had a few basic filtering rules. Firstly, it should not be a business seller, it should be a private seller. Secondly, there should be at least 20 feedback and no more than 300 feedback - all positive.  Thirdly, he shouldn't have sold the same kind of item except in the case of books. I start from there, and filter further.

The very first thing I bought was a treadmill for a friend in London from a seller from London, and although I had already bought the item he refused to ship it to the address as I was not from anywhere near the UK. But I spoke to him via messages and convinced him. He left me a fabulous feedback.

I've bought many mobile phones and books. And various heavy metal patches for a boy who's interested in them. USB dongles, stickers, pens, and other items.

However I haven't bought anything since they changed their business strategies, interface, listing styles, and such. Therefore I have no idea how it works now, but when I was buying through them I could somehow stay away from scammers.

I've bought over three thousand items over the years, with only a couple of real problems.

My criteria are a reasonable number of feedback as a seller and and a near 100% positive, plus common sense & avoiding those with generic photos rather than the actual items.
