Staking set question

had cause to use my staking set today ( not something I use very often ) and I noticed that some of the tapered stakes that have holes in the end but they have a hole in the side as well , I can’t fathom a reason for it anyone know ?.

The hole in the side is so that when you break a staff/pivot in there you have a way to try and push it back out.

Thanks for that but that’s not going to worry me then because I only restore torsion clocks, thinking about it that makes sense.
