Mystery (self-healing RA clock!)

What could be a possible explanation for this?
1)This clock, previously working, began to only swing for a few seconds after I started the pendulum. Tried several times.
2) I left it alone for years.
3) then I shipped it across country in a moving van, laying on its back in a cushioned box.
4) I left it in that box for years, on its back.
5)I took it out finally and noticed a small amount of oil had leaked out (that may not be relevant.) I started the pendulum (and days later noticed that it was stored in an almost wound-down state). Without any further intervention, from the first pendulum swing, it has now been working beautifully for 1.5 years!
Anyone have any guess as to how to explain this?

My guess is the oil that leaked, dissolved some dried up oil, freeing the mechanism.
