The watch is Waltham serial # 2180373,  which according to the Pocket Watch Database  is a model 1877 P.S. Bartlett.  It needs a balance staff, but something is off.

As far as I can tell, it needs a 986/987 staff, which is supposedly the same as a 1364/1365 staff. First question, what dimension is the "waist" ?  There is a large and small version, but the numbers I've found, like on the Otto Frei site, don't make any sense to me.

Second question, the collet seat on the staff that I removed does not match the dimensions of the above staffs, they are .91, and I'm measuring ~0.96-0.97 on the original one. Aargh.

So, what I'm wondering is if there is a Waltham staff with that collet seat dimension? Or am I dealing with a modified balance?

Enquiring minds want to know, but I'm guessing that I'm finally going to have to bite the bullet and make a staff.
