I have a 1912 Waltham Pocket Watch that I picked up. I'm kinda new to watch repair, and i wanted to try and get this one working again! The problem I'm having is that when I rotate the pallet fork back and forth, the escapement does not turn. It just kinda moves back and forth. Please see photos. Any and all tips appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello and welcome, goldentalon34. My guess is that you're not delivering energy to the escape wheel. Possible causes: the mainspring isn't wound, the gear train is misaligned or has a broken pivot somewhere, and "gunk in the junk."

Swordfish, thank you! What was happening was the winding arbor was slipping as i wound the watch, therefore not winding the mainspring. I tightened it down and now the pallet goes back and forth like it supposed to!

Goldenton34, I'm happier than you are! You see I too am a newbie hobbyist—defined as still learning from mistakes I had not made previously—and being able to diagnose your problem feels like a rite of passage for me, in which I advance from complete newb to intermediate newb. Good luck, and enjoy are maddening hobby!
