Beginner's pocket watch - 1925 Elgin Grade 315

Recommended Posts

So I decided I wanted to learn how to fix watches, as one does, and after many nights browsing eBay I decided to jump in and buy this beautiful little watch. It wasn't running at all when I got it, and the keyless works were all stuck and it wasn't moving the hands when the crown was pulled out. I disassembled and cleaned everything, and even bought a microscope to try servicing the balance jewels (almost losing a screw or two in the process). The crystal is in very good condition, and the dial is nearly pristine, and cleaned up very nicely with a bit of distilled water and a microfiber swab.

After a couple of weekends troubleshooting piece by piece I got everything running, and after lubricating everything it's running well and keeping very good time. The time grapher app I'm using on my PC suggests it's running +/- 5 seconds with around 290 degrees amplitude, but the beat error is pretty bad at around 4 ms. I tried adjusting that too, but when I took the balance off and inspected the hairspring under the scope I noticed a partial fracture of the hairspring collet! I found a donor movement for $12 though, so hopefully it has a good hairspring I can swap in

Unfortunately all too common on pocket watches in which case it's best to leave it alone.

As you're new here just a reminder swapping hairsprings usually leads to timing issues. Typically on modern watches you cannot swap the hairspring as each hairspring is vibrated to that exact balance wheel. In the case of the Elgin watch You can swap the hairspring but You will have to match the balance wheel to the hairspring. In other words  there will be some timing adjustment issues.

I would try to swap the entire balance wheel and who knows you might be lucky and it might just swap but probably won't.

Your PC is suggesting excellent timing wonderful amplitude and why do we care about the beat now? Of course there is the problem of how does the watch really run over 24 hours versus the timing. Plus I assume you looked at the timing and more than one position? But it's back to is it worth trying to fix the beat error?

That totally makes sense that the balance and spring go together. As long as it runs well I could probably live with the beat error. I just have to give it a bit of a twist to get it running. It's not consistent in all positions (about +/- 60 seconds stem up/down, but I'm not sure it was even when it was new since it's an unadjusted movement.

I'll probably just keep the donor movement as a spare in case the collet on this one ever completely breaks.

    • OK Rich, may be You are just a little bit more worried than really needed. Who am I to say, jus a newbie here but... Such a big forum will not collapse in any case, exept if the people loose their interest to participate. If something happens to the owner,  then senior members will be able to handle the forum. Let me show an example where one of the moderators of the russian forum (thow He was not russian), a man of great knowlage abd big heart, passed away in 2023. Thow His personal site is still working, the russians coppied the whole site to safe place here. I mean, all depends on the people and if they need to do something, they will find the way. Actually, the forum is place where people can meet and share. As a final measure, people can share their phone numbers and use Viber to comunicate, at least people who are interested to keep connection between each other.
    • Since I couldn't slow the machine down enough for my liking, I started off slowly with a higher grit.  I began (very lightly) with 1000 grit paper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DTJBND1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Finished with 3000 grit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DTFSMT1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Afterwards I went on to polish with traditional methods using felt & cotton wheels, with different grades of Dialux. Hope this helps.
    • Ok so there is barely any response happening . After this last attempt i think I'm just going to give up on it because very few seem genuinely interested or even bothered or worried what may happen in the future. ( if someone can set me straight I'd love to hear it ) I would think anyone into watches has heard of Roland Ranfft, how they grew to love and depend upon his site for detailed information. And not just that, he also had a view about Ebay and everyone that visited Roland's site knew exactly what he thought about Ebay, Roland's site also had a secondhand watch sale side to it.  If anyone here could have done anything to preserve his site and keep it exactly the way it was.........Would you have done something to make that happen ?  Its been pointed out to me but not in so many words  that I'm probably coming across as an insensitive p.rick, truly I'm sorry about that, i say it as it is but no malice is intended and yes clearly I'm putting my forum membership on the line here. I'll happily shut up about it now, I've done all i can.
    • Thank you so much for posting this!  Although this movement is serviceable, there are no service notes that I've been able to find.  This is a great alternative!
    • Greetings from another electronics designer & programmer!   I suggest you get a batch of similar scrap movements from ebay - I found batches of Seikos very cheaply, I got seven of one type for £11 (or 11 Euros possibly?). Those were ladies, 4206B I believe. There are also mens movements at a slightly higher price; eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134723051997 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/235565276549 They are cheap enough so it does not matter what gets messed up or lost & you can probably still get one or two working movements from a batch, even if some part are damaged when you get them. (I've had quite a bit from the guy in Holland, he usually has a good range of movements).
