I think though anything that is soft enough not to marr the movement but resilient enough to stand up to regular use would work Rich.

Magnum litvae sounds like something Dirty Harry would use, " you gotta ask yourself one question,  do I feel lucky ? Well do ya punk ? . Close Tom , you nearly got it, switch a few letters around. It was actually used for making bearings years ago, maybe still is .  Timber would be so much easier for me, like the rotary washer stand I cobbled together a few days ago , thing is I wouldn't learn to machine with steel. I've found some 28mm copper pipe, might be some machining happening later today. I still like the idea of a solid blank, curious to see how well it would machine.

I think the poly rolling pins would be a really good experiment Rich, I expect that you could work it easy enough on your woodwork lathe and with the same tools.
