Advice needed on removing case tube from Rolex ref. 5500

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some advice on removing the old case tube from this Rolex 5500. I realize it is threaded in but the center is round and the old style like this does not seem to have an adapted tool for removal. I have a pretty basic set up on tools. This includes a staking set, a number of case presses, pliers etc... I do not have a dedicated case tube removal tool.

Any and all advice on this task is appreciated. Not in a hurry.

Not sure about your model specifically, but some Rolex tubes have the splines deep in the case section of the tube.

The older ones often have the "inner splines" that are less obvious when viewed from the outside, such as the tube in the center, vs the more common outer spline tubes (right).

Removing these is really easy with the right tool and vexing without it.

Note that these Rolex tubes are often sealed with a mild threadlocker, so heating the case (like a heated ultrasonic or warm water) will help if the tube won't budge.
