I know this is probably the silliest question asked on here, but I m having issues getting the back case off a watch. It's a Ciro Citterio I got off ebay dirt cheap. There are no screws, it's just a smooth chrome plate. I've tried both a case opener and a good sharp knife but with no luck. I've also had a good scan over the forum to no avail. Am I being daft and missing something simple?

Some can be little b's to get off. You should find a small tab on the edge or sometimes a very small nick in the case back to help. And of course not all watches have removable backs, some have a bezel on the front. Have a good look with your loupe. Failing that, posting a picture or two might help.

right. check that the caseback does not say something like "remove thru glass". if so, the back will not come off - well, it will, but that's not how to do it. you'd then need to remove the crystal.

Thanks for the advice and the replies. There's no sign of any tabs or anything saying remove through glass, in spite of a good  look round with my loupe. Pics are as follows:

Also check between the lugs (remove the band).  Sometimes the slit for popping the back is hidden from view by the band.
