Hold A Movement, When And How

How you hold the movement during your work?

Holder? Cushion? Fingers?

Do you use a holder always or only when you work directly inside the movement? A holder also when you fix the hands?

Depends. Some of the time in its a holder, other times in fingers (with cotts). Taking off a dial, for instance, needs the movement to be held between fingers to get at the dial screws.

My kids hold the movement for me while I work on it. Just kidding!

 

Will is right and I may add, most of the time the movement should be in some appropriate holder depending on what you are doing. The case is the one that sits, crystal down, on the cushion for whatever reason you need it there. Its function is to protect the crystal (mainly). Since it doesn't hold the watch firmly, its function is not the same as a good holder or even a vise...you just use what the situation demands...
