Failure! I attempted to pull the bad exit stone from one fork (came out without further damage) and then pull the still good exit stone from the other fork but it crumbled like sand. I had soaked it in alcohol about a half hour and all the surface shellac brushed away. Oh well. This one will go back in the box until I have another compatible fork; probably not going to spend $30 on a jewel. It was a bare movement from a junk box and nobody will miss it.

Wow okay! I think I would envision that actually decreasing end shake rather than increasing it but I have never tried it. As long as it is spinning freely now. Don't take the hairspring off - I prefer to take the balance complete off the balance cock and adjust it while on a bench block. Plenty of other people prefer to just reach through the hairspring suspended on a balance tack but I have caused too much damage that way. Use a small screwdriver or another tool that fits in the collet slot. (A screwdriver is not best for this but may be the only thing you have that fits) Sight through between the banking pins from the escape wheel jewel to the balance jewel. If the jewel is off to the right of center, turn the collet counter clockwise. If the jewel is left of center, turn the collet clockwise. There's a picture in one of John's old posts (of course)

If you draw an imaginary line from the impulse jewel and the center of the pivot, it should be orthogonal to the balance arms. Then, position the hairspring so that when the balance wheel is at rest position the same imaginary line bisects the line between the banking pins. @JohnR725, correct me if I am wrong. It is how I do it, but I have not seen a lifetime of watches. -
Hi everyone, I'm a hobbyist in vintage watch repair who has already benefited greatly from some of the knowledge shared here on past projects. Many thanks to those who have shared and happy to be coming on board.
