Hello Watchmakers,

I am a total noob when it comes to watchmaking and I am totally fascinated with it that I want to dive into it. I am in need of advice, as well as, guidance. I have my grandfather’s Orient 3 Star caliber 46941 that as far as I know has never been serviced. It is not running, even after wearing it a full day. So I understand that there maybe issues with it and will know more once I disassemble it and clean it; but I want to acquire some items in advance, that may help me on reassembly. One of them is a new mainspring. I understand that new parts for this caliber may not be able to be found and that I may have to buy a donor movement to assist me, but I will like to get a new mainspring for it, this will mean I will have to buy a generic Swiss ETA mainspring replacement. My problem is that I can’t find info onto what that generic Swiss ETA mainspring replacement model/part number is for this Orient movement . I can’t even find the maintenance/repair manual for the caliber 46941.

Could someone please provide me with some info, point me to the right direction. I would really appreciate it.

Thank you all for your time.

1- Remove the rotor.

2- Gently lift one side of balance rim, balance shouldn't noticably tilt, if it does, a pivot is broken.

3- If no tilt, put a drop of ligher fluid on balance jewel capstones, shake the watch, see if balance turns freely. If you have access to a high torque gear, turn it and see if balance takes off and go.

You are checking/ testing each parts functioning as you disassemble, check end and side shakes ...etc.  By this approach you are fault finding during disassembly. 🧐

Mainsprings are generally replaced with new ones, no so for other parts before knowing which one you need.

Having a donor movement is a good idea in general.

Commonly folks who unscrew any screw they can see, end up saying " I am at a loss" . 😩

This movement is on caliber corner, there are a couple of links on the page to service videos which might be useful

https://calibercorner.com/orient-caliber-46941/

This store has several parts for this movement but I don’t see any mainspring

Tripped over this for a barrel complete

otherwise for the mainspring you’ll need to measure it

i don’t think you’ll get a new replacement movement so it’ll be eBay or there are some sellers on Aliexpress who appear to sell these old movements but the translation is a bit iffy.

best of luck
