A goal acheived

Recommended Posts

I joined this forum about a year ago after getting interested in watches from digging out 3 inherited watches; 2 pockets and the Omega pie pan that is my avatar. My goal was to get proficient enough to work on my ancestor's time pieces. What I did not expect was how deep I would become immersed and what a great community of sharing ideas, learning, historiy and stories I would find here. I previously spent time in a coin collecting forum but the depth of horology intrigues me much more than numismatics, although that is a great hobby /profession as well.

I find myself fairly emotional as I write this post as I just managed to get the worse of the 3 watches running! It is a Swiss pocket watch with a clam shell silver (0.800) hunter case all matching serial numbers. The inscription is to my great grandfather from his father and dated Jan. 9, (18) 91. Yes, 133 years and 6 days from the presentation. There is a ways to go for restoration, but my grandfather passed more than 47 years ago and it is ticking again...20240115_2014002.thumb.jpg.c1f2fa3cc73d30dcc589dc1492ef16c3.jpgDSCN56952.thumb.JPG.98be11a3a3fe4aba729de23769d4acde.JPGDSCN56942.thumb.JPG.3ce2099af25a19aac9d15384f19fb625.JPGDSCN56932.thumb.JPG.fb188f01447e0c394cf8ba453d053b15.JPGDSCN56982.thumb.JPG.07250cd63f674265bc6bc2ed9a02eb8b.JPGDSCN56962.thumb.JPG.7c7e8dbef5f4163bc62ccf21418b4df6.JPGDSCN56992.thumb.JPG.8f3617716626c739fc6f841035a2eced.JPG

I am hoping folks here can help me try to figure out the watchmaker who made this. This last shot is cool in that you can see the paper under the train bridge in front of both screws.

The biggest clues I see are the Locle and L or LE Robert engraving on the movement cover plate. This is different than the presentation engraving and is not the name of my relative. Several houses got their start in Locle Switzerland including VC, Ulysses Nardin, and Zenirh I beleive. Thanks for reading.

😅 yes it gets you like that , i was still filling up an hour after i got my grandfather's watch ticking 50 years after he died. Funny hobby this , for another the next day you can end up vocalising loudy multiples of expletives joined in a variety of unimaginable ways.

I put some information into an AI program and it spit out L. Robert Le Locle, brand of pocket watches started by Louis Robert in Le Locle in 1869 and later the company was sold to Jules Mathey in 1929. Not sure how much of this is true because you have to fact check AI. The watch movement is 28.6mm or about 12 1/2 ligne. It is a crown wind and crown hand set as well (by pressing a button on the edge of the case and turning the crown).

    • I've got a similar one, but never had to use it yet. I would try a couple of M4 (or whichever) washers under each blade, and possibly longer countersunk machine screws, either hex or torx drive so the blades can be really solidly locked down. It does not appear there can be much depth of thread in the blocks above the slide shafts, so matching the screw length to the blade height is probably quite important.
    • Don't the holders have different sizes front & back? I started out with some cheap cast metal ones, but had a lot of trouble with the movements coming loose, so I got a pair of Bergen ones from cousins, a 4039 and a 4040. Those a well made, properly machines and between them they cover from around 10mm up to all the pocket watches I've had so far.
    • Hi Friends, As you might have seen yesterday I'm on to my second restoration and its a Seiko from the 70's (i'm pretty sure) I need to source a new Crystal but I'm struggling to figure out how to identify what type it is. (I did some forum searching but couldnt come up with anything) I'm pretty sure its mineral glass (and that lines up with what I've read online) the outside is flat, there is a pretty good sized bevel around he outside edge, but the inside is surface is concave. It measures 31mm in diameter, and at its thickest (around the edge) its 2.1mm. I was hoping to hop on Esslinger to order up a replacement but that hasn't worked out. I can't find anything of this style.  Any ideas? Thanks so much.
    • I'm having difficulty finding an exact match to the spare case & what movement it originally had? The nearest I can find are the Power Glide, with a 560RSS movement and Borgel case - though that model has a deep case back for the automatic works, while my case has a flush back. https://gruen.watch/?product=gruen-geneve-23-precision-power-glide-560rss https://www.birthyearwatches.com/product/c1959-gruen-power-glide-automatic/ The case shape and crown detail are identical to that, and dimensions match except for depth.   The 560 appears to be the same diameter as the 510 and from the same era, so it does seem possible that it's for a less common 510 version? I just have to find an appropriate dial to suit it.
